In my previous blog, I discussed self-sabotage habits. Procrastination is one sign that we are sabotaging ourselves. Breaking the habit of being a last-minute person can be genuinely challenging. However, we may improve our time management and organisation skills with specific practical strategies.

Here are 7 tips to stop being a last-minute person:

  1. Set Goals: set clear goals, and define long and short-term goals. These goals will help us motivate ourselves and set the direction to manage our time better.
  2. Use a planner or digital application: we have to set up a workable system to keep on track with our daily tasks, deadlines and appointments. Each individual shall find the best tools to help them to manage time.
  3. Set up Priorities: some procrastinate because they don’t know how to start. Setting priorities helps determine the most urgent, important and less important start. We should be clear on which task to tackle first.
  4. Set up Deadlines: specifying a deadline for each task helps us to manage our work and time better. We must prioritise tasks with closer deadlines and adjust other tasks based on this schedule. Some tasks may seem essential, but they are not urgent until approaching the deadline, for example. And we should think about some tedious tasks (we thought) that are very important for the long-term.
  5. Identify Distractions: spending time listing our distractions is essential. Social media, noise, uncomfortable spaces, anything that usually causes our procrastination habit.
  6. Practise self-awareness: Some people with problems with self-discipline tend to ask for help. Before asking for help or support, try to evaluate yourself and seek inside ourself.
  7. Recheck our commitment, and practise self-talk to motivate ourselves to keep up with our schedule to pursue our goals. We should promise to reward ourselves when we can complete tasks on time. Even a tiny completion creates a sense of accomplishment.

Changing habits cannot happen overnight, keep practising and appreciate our self-growth is a way to stop being a last-minute person. Do you have experience of being a last minute-person?
